📋 Overview

LaLiga Hypermotion 2026/27 (M)

Football · 2026/27

Giants sleep in this division: hundred-year-old clubs with vast followings that once touched Europe and now dream of returning to the top flight. Twenty-two teams and 42 rounds of pure attrition, with packed historic stadiums and an atmosphere that envies nothing about the elite — 6.1 million through the turnstiles in 2024/25, a divisional record.

The 2026/27 season is an endless endurance race for two automatic promotions and a ticket to a roller-coaster play-off. Every point weighs a ton, and here too the battles for sharpest attack and meanest defence rage on, hallmarks of the sides that genuinely aim to go up. At the bottom, the trap of relegation to Primera Federación lurks without mercy.

This is the division of the 92nd-minute goal and of fans who push like nowhere else. Every season someone lives the dream of promotion… and someone watches it slip away on the final day.

Ninety-six editions deep

The first recorded match at El Molinón was played on 20 May 1908. One hundred and eighteen years later, Spain's oldest professional football ground — 29,371 seats in Gijón — still opens its gates in the second tier. The division was born in 1928-29, at the same time as the top flight; the Civil War shut it down between 1936 and 1939, and the clubs' own league body has run it since 1984. The 2026/27 campaign is edition number 96.

Its roll of honour looks nothing like the one upstairs. Real Murcia lead with eight titles, Real Betis follow with seven, and then come Deportivo, Sporting Gijón and Real Oviedo, tied on five. Two of those three line up this season, and their grounds explain the scale of the place: the Carlos Tartiere holds 30,500, the Gran Canaria in Las Palmas 32,392.

The commercial name changes more often than the badges: LaLiga SmartBank from 2019 to 2023, LaLiga Hypermotion since 2023/24. What keeps growing is the gate. In 2024/25 the division broke six million spectators for the first time — 6.1 million, an average of 13,228 a match, 26% up on the previous year — after a decade that had never once cleared 11,000.

How 2025/26 ended

Eighty-two points. That was Racing Santander's total when the regular phase of 2025/26 closed, and it made them champions; Deportivo La Coruña went up alongside them on 77. Behind that pair sat the pile-up that defines this league: Almería 74, Málaga 73, Las Palmas 73, Castellón 72, Burgos 72. Burgos missed the play-off on exactly the same points as the side in sixth.

The promotion play-off ran as long as the season itself. Almería edged Castellón 4-3 on aggregate — 1-1 at Castalia on 6 June, 3-2 at home on the 9th — while Málaga saw off Las Palmas 2-1, winning 0-1 at the Gran Canaria on 7 June and drawing 1-1 at La Rosaleda on the 10th. The final went to the last night: 0-0 in Málaga on 14 June, 1-2 in Almería on the 20th. The third promotion went to the fourth-placed club, at the expense of the side that had finished above it.

Four went the other way: Mirandés, Huesca, Cultural Leonesa and Zaragoza dropped to Primera Federación. Sergio Arribas scored 25 for Almería and took the Zarra Trophy; goalkeeper Ander Cantero conceded 0.79 a game, the best figure in the division.

How 2026/27 arrives

Three clubs come down from the top flight with the trapdoor still swinging. Girona are back two years after playing the first Champions League nights in their history, earned by finishing third in LaLiga 2023/24 on 81 points. Mallorca return after five straight seasons upstairs, with a rebuilt Son Moix and 23,142 seats. And Real Oviedo drop after a single year up: in June 2025 they had beaten Mirandés 3-1 in the play-off second leg — 3-2 on aggregate — in front of more than 29,000 at the Carlos Tartiere, ending a 24-year exile.

Four come up from Primera Federación. Tenerife and Eldense won their groups; Sabadell and Celta Fortuna came through the play-offs. The Vigo reserve side did something Celta had never managed in 103 years of history: put their second team into professional football, with a 0-0 away and a 4-1 at Balaídos against Ponferradina.

The rest of the grid is two reserve sides — Real Sociedad B and Celta Fortuna — and the clubs left on the doorstep: play-off semi-finalists Las Palmas and Castellón, seventh-placed Burgos, beaten finalists Almería, plus Granada, Cádiz, Valladolid, Leganés and a Sporting Gijón who drew an average of 21,131 to El Molinón in 2024/25. The first ball is kicked on Friday 14 August at Zubieta: Real Sociedad B against Castellón, 20:30.

Going up, going down

Forty-two matchdays: twenty-two clubs meeting twice, home and away, from 14 August 2026 to 6 June 2027. Among Europe's major second tiers only England's Championship plays more — 46 rounds with 24 clubs — while the 2. Bundesliga and Ligue 2 stop at 34.

Three go up. Champions and runners-up are promoted automatically. Third through sixth contest a two-legged play-off — 3rd v 6th, 4th v 5th — between 9 and 20 June 2027, and whoever wins the final joins them. Here is the detail that settles ties: there is no penalty shootout in any round. If the aggregate is level, even after extra time in the final, the club that finished higher in the table goes through. That same club also hosts the second leg. Which is why a point in February can be worth a promotion in June.

Four go down to Primera Federación. And one clause applies only to divisions that admit reserve sides: a B team cannot be promoted to the top flight, so if it finishes in a promotion place the slot passes to the next club. On top of that, if the parent club is relegated into this division while its reserve side is already here, the reserve drops to Primera Federación automatically. This season the clause covers two: Real Sociedad B and Celta Fortuna.
