📋 Overview

Liga MX Apertura 2026 (M)

Football · Apertura 2026

Colour, drums and a crowd that pushes for all ninety minutes: in Mexico, football is celebrated like a festival that fills stadiums from north to south. It's the most-watched championship in the Americas, a land of idols and of a joyful, vertical, uninhibited game unlike any other on the continent.

The Apertura 2026 tournament brings together 18 clubs in a short 17-round regular phase… but here the champion is NOT decided by the table. The top six go straight to the quarter-finals, seventh to tenth fight through the Play-In, and from there the two-legged Liguilla — quarters, semis and final — hands out the title with extra time and heartbreaking penalties. Finishing top overall is an honour; the trophy is lifted in the Liguilla. Along the way, the sharpest attack and the meanest defence.

And then there are its Clásicos, among the fiercest on the planet: the Clásico Nacional between América and Chivas brings the country to a halt, while the Clásico Joven against Cruz Azul and the Regio between Monterrey and Tigres split their cities down to the final penalty.

Two champions a year since 1996

Mexico has split its season into two independent tournaments since 1996. At first they were called Invierno and Verano; since 2002 they have been Apertura and Clausura. Each has its own regular phase, its own Liguilla and its own champion, so the country crowns two teams per calendar year.

That has to be held in mind when reading any Mexican honour roll. América lead with 16 titles, followed by Guadalajara and Toluca on 12 each and Cruz Azul on 10, but those numbers do not compare with a European league's: two fit into every year here, and more than sixty have been handed out since 1996.

The flip side is that a tournament lasts seventeen rounds. There is no room to start badly and recover over the winter: in Europe a five-match run without a win is digested, and here it leaves you out of the Liguilla before October.

Rotondi at 90+5

The Clausura 2026 final arrived at the second leg goalless from the first and was settled at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario. Pumas went ahead through Morales; an own goal levelled the tie and, in the 90th minute plus five, Rodolfo Rotondi turned it over completely.

With that 2-1 aggregate, Cruz Azul lifted their tenth title, ended five years without one and settled in as the country's fourth most decorated club. And one detail makes it crueller: the Olímpico Universitario is Pumas's home, so they lost the final on their own pitch and in added time. It is the kind of ending that explains why in Mexico the trophy is not handed out on the table: five months of competition settled in the 95th minute of the last match.

In that same edition the highest-scoring side was Pumas, with 34 goals, and the meanest defence Toluca's, with 16 conceded. Neither lifted anything. Again, the Liguilla.

A club returns by buying another's place

The novelty of this Apertura comes not from a signing but from an entire team. Atlante return to the Mexican first division after twelve years, and not by winning promotion but by buying Mazatlán FC's franchise. The deal was approved on 23 April 2026 at a federation assembly of clubs.

The move was total: the place was transferred from Sinaloa to Mexico City, Mazatlán disappeared from the top flight after six years of existence and took over the slot Atlante were leaving in the second tier. A club founded in 1916 gets its place back and one founded in 2020 loses it, without either playing a match to decide it.

And there is a consequence visible every weekend: Atlante play at the Estadio Azteca, already shared by América and Cruz Azul. Three top-flight teams on the same pitch, which no other major league in the world has.

Nobody goes down here

Since the 2020-21 season, Liga MX has had no relegation. It was suspended when the pandemic cut Clausura 2020 in half and it has not come back: the bottom club pays a financial fine, but stays.

That completely changes what the lower half of the table means. In any European league, the closing rounds of a struggling side are the most intense on the calendar; here, a club mathematically out of the Liguilla by round 13 has absolutely nothing at stake in the four that remain. There is no punishment below, only the absence of a prize above.

For predicting, that detail is worth more than many statistics. Matches between two already-eliminated teams are played with reserves, with youth players and with minds on the next tournament, and their scorelines look little like those of the same squads in September. It pays to check who is still alive before checking who is better.
