NCAA Football 2026 (M)
American Football · 2026
There are college stadiums that hold 100,000 people on an October Saturday. In the United States, college football isn't the NFL's waiting room: it's a competition with bigger attendances than many professional leagues worldwide, century-old rivalries, and teams that never meet despite competing for the same thing.
That's the oddity of the sport: 138 top-tier teams and only 12 games each to rank them, with schedules so uneven that an undefeated side can miss out while a 2-loss team gets in. Which is why it ended up with a 12-team playoff, and why every November Saturday someone loses their season in 60 minutes.
2026 opens on 29 August with North Carolina at TCU and San José State at USC. 946 games to January, and from the very first weekend there are teams with their year on the line. There's no slack here: a September defeat still counts in December.
From a field in New Brunswick to 107,601 seats
On 6 November 1869, Rutgers and Princeton met in New Brunswick to play something that still looked more like European football than anything you see on a Saturday now. American college sport grew out of that afternoon: no promotion, no relegation, no franchises packing up for a better market. The teams are universities, and a university does not relocate.
That root explains the scale. Six college venues seat more than 100,000, led by Michigan Stadium — 107,601 places, opened on 1 October 1927 and known as "the Big House" — which drew 115,109 against Notre Dame on 7 September 2013. No stadium in the country, in any sport, is bigger.
What took a long time to arrive was a champion. For more than a century the national title was voted on by journalists and coaches in polls rather than won on the field: some seasons finished with two different champions depending on whom you asked. The Bowl Championship Series (1998-2013) finally put the top two in one game; the College Football Playoff arrived in 2014 with four teams and grew to twelve in 2024. In between, Nick Saban's Alabama took three playoff-era crowns — 2015, 2017 and 2020 — before he retired in January 2024.
16-0: the season that broke the record books
Sixteen wins, no defeats. No top-tier team had gone 16-0 since the 1894 Yale Bulldogs, and the side that managed it last season was not Ohio State or Alabama: it was Indiana, a programme that had never won anything nationally, with Curt Cignetti barely into his second year in charge.
Two steps on the way stood very tall. First the Big Ten final, 13-10 against Ohio State, a trench-warfare scoreline in a conference used to putting up forty. Then, on 19 January 2026 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, the national title game: Indiana 27, Miami 21, with the Hurricanes entering the playoff as the twelfth seed and running all the way to the last night. Indiana became the first new champion since Florida in 1996, and the first Big Ten title winner other than Michigan or Ohio State since Minnesota in 1960.
Underneath, December delivered surprises. Duke beat Virginia 27-20 in overtime for the ACC; Kennesaw State, barely arrived in the division, took Conference USA; Texas Tech crushed BYU 34-7 and Georgia dismissed Alabama 28-7. Tulane saw off North Texas 34-21 for the American. And all of that only dealt the playoff's cards.
How 2026 arrives: the Pac-12 comes back
The Pac-12 exists again. After the 2024 exodus left it down to Oregon State and Washington State, the conference rebuilds this season with six arrivals: Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State and Utah State come across from the Mountain West, and Texas State from the Sun Belt. Eight members, the smallest group in the division.
The knock-on effect runs across the whole map. The Mountain West patches the holes with UTEP, with Hawai'i as a full member, with Northern Illinois arriving from the MAC for football only, and with North Dakota State, stepping up from the tier below. The MAC takes in Sacramento State; Louisiana Tech leaves for the Sun Belt. The result: 138 teams spread across ten conferences, two more than a year ago.
Indiana defends with Cignetti, who turned down everything he was offered in the spring. Waiting for them are the usual names — Ohio State, champion in 2024 and beaten in its conference final; Georgia, arriving as SEC champion; Texas, Oregon, Alabama — and a Miami side that finished six points short. The calendar closes the way tradition demands: on 28 November, Michigan at Ohio State, the Iron Bowl between Auburn and Alabama and Texas-Texas A&M all kick off together; on 12 December, when everyone else has finished, Army and Navy have the television to themselves.
How a champion is decided among 138
Twelve games per team and not one shared schedule: every university builds its own by negotiating opponents, and well over a hundred of this season's fixtures are against teams from the tier below. Nobody plays everybody, so comparing records is an act of faith. Which is why the system leans on a selection committee that publishes a weekly ranking from November onwards.
The ten conferences run from the eighteen universities of the Big Ten to the eight of the Pac-12, with Notre Dame and UConn competing as independents. Each crowns a champion on the first weekend of December — the 4th and 5th this year — in a one-off game between its two best. Then come the bowls: forty-one of them last winter, standalone reward fixtures that form no knockout at all.
The knockout is the College Football Playoff. Twelve teams: five automatic places — the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 and SEC champions, plus the highest-ranked Group of Six side, champion or not — and seven invitations by ranking. The top four sit out the first round; since 2025 those seeds come from the ranking alone, with no privilege attached to a conference title. The first round is played on 18 and 19 December at the better seed's own stadium, not on neutral ground. Quarter-finals and semi-finals rotate through the New Year's Six bowls — Rose, Sugar, Orange, Cotton, Peach and Fiesta — and the final is set for 25 January 2027 at Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, Nevada. It was due to grow to sixteen: the Big Ten wanted twenty-four, the SEC sixteen, no agreement was reached and it stayed at twelve.
