📋 Overview

WNBA 2026 (F)

Basketball · 2026

Toronto and Portland pull on new shirts this May, taking the league to 15 teams — three more than two seasons ago. The Tempo are also the first franchise outside the United States, so the WNBA crosses a border for the first time in three decades. It's 44 games each, May to September, for eight playoff places.

Las Vegas defend the title they won by sweeping Phoenix 4-0 in October, though that 4-0 flatters them badly: two of the four were decided by three points and by two. And before the final, the Aces had needed all five semi-final games to see off Indiana. Nothing was won comfortably last year.

The unfinished business fits inside those two points in Game 3. Phoenix led at home and lost it 88-90; if that night falls the other way the series goes to a fifth game and this page is about a different champion. The Mercury come back in May knowing it exactly.

The record is shared by a team that no longer exists

The league was founded on 24 April 1996 and played its first season in 1997. The same team won the first four, the Houston Comets, and that is where the strange part begins: the Comets folded in 2008 and yet they remain tied at the top of the honour roll.

Their four titles are matched today by the Minnesota Lynx and the Seattle Storm, also on four. The Las Vegas Aces are third on three. Which means the record of a thirty-year competition is shared by a franchise that has not played for eighteen years, and none of the clubs still active has managed to beat it.

That detail says a lot about how this league has grown: for years it survived on franchises that opened and closed, and only in the last decade has it entered a phase of sustained expansion. The honour roll still carries the mark of that instability.

The first best-of-seven final

The 2025 final was the first in the league's history played over the best of seven. Until then the title was decided over five, and before that over three: the WNBA has stretched its own showcase as it has found the audience to sustain it.

The irony is that, with the long format brand new, the series ended in the minimum possible. Las Vegas took a third title without dropping a game, and with it the Aces moved to within one of the three franchises that share the record.

And one detail frames the previous year well: the team that lost the final had reached it without being favourite in any of its earlier ties. In a league where eight of fifteen qualify and the series are short, the route matters less than the form you carry into September.

How 2026 arrives: a new deal and a road to eighteen

The most important thing about this year was signed off the court. The league and the players closed a new collective bargaining agreement, and out of it come salaries and conditions that had been argued over for years; without that deal, the season would not have started on time.

With the agreement settled came everything else: an expansion draft on 3 April to fill the Portland and Toronto rosters, a free agency squeezed into two weeks and the ordinary draft on the 13th. An entire season's market inside a month.

And the two new franchises are not the end of the plan but the start of it. The league has announced its arrival at eighteen teams by 2030, with Cleveland in 2028, Detroit in 2029 and Philadelphia in 2030. Going from twelve to eighteen in five years is a rate no American professional league has sustained in decades.

The conferences exist and count for nothing

The WNBA keeps two conferences, East and West, and uses neither of them when handing out playoff places. The top eight in the overall table qualify, wherever they come from, and the pairings are made by position: first plays eighth, second plays seventh, and so on.

That means one conference can put five teams in and the other three with no correction from the rulebook, something unthinkable in the NBA. With fifteen franchises, eight places are more than half the league: finishing above average is enough to still be there in September.

The consequence for anyone predicting is that the overall table is everything and the conferences are close to decorative. There is no need to track two standings or wonder whether a Western team has the harder road: all that matters is the number you hold after 44 games, because that number decides who you play and who has home court.
