📋 Overview

Liga ASOBAL 2026/27 (M)

Handball · 2026/27

Thirty games, thirty wins. That is how Barcelona closed 2025/26 in Spain: 60 points out of 60, without dropping so much as a draw in nine months. Behind them Logroño and Granollers finished level on 43 — seventeen back — and that is the shape of this league: the title is rarely in doubt, while the rest of the podium is fought out round by round until June.

2026/27 starts on 12 September with sixteen clubs and 240 games ahead, and there is no playoff: whoever leads the table on 5 June lifts the trophy. Bidasoa, Ademar and Sevilla are back in the European conversation, and the bottom of the table plays for something less glamorous and far harder, because teams do go down.

The real duel is for second: Logroño and Granollers ended on the same 43 points and share the loudest arenas on the calendar. You decide whether anyone takes a point off Barça.

From the Primera División Nacional to ASOBAL

The Spanish championship was born in 1951 as the Primera División Nacional, and for forty years it belonged to clubs that now sound like another era: Alicante's Calpisa won four, Atlético de Madrid eleven, Granollers thirteen. In 1990 the clubs formed ASOBAL and took the competition over: since then the league has carried their name and is run by the teams that play in it.

What came next has one protagonist and one rival. Barcelona have thirty-three titles, more than everyone else combined. The only side that truly stood up to them was Ciudad Real, five leagues between 2004 and 2010 and a full unbeaten season in 2009/10; the club moved to Madrid in 2011 and folded two years later, and the last serious opposition went with it.

Since then ASOBAL has collected numbers that only make sense in a championship with an owner: seven perfect Barcelona seasons — 2013/14, 2014/15, 2015/16, 2016/17, 2019/20, 2020/21 and 2022/23 — and a 146-match unbeaten run that lasted four years, ten months and twenty-six days.

Last season

2025/26 was Barcelona's eighth perfect season: thirty rounds, thirty wins, 60 points out of 60. The title was mathematically settled on 12 April 2026, with rounds to spare, and from then on the only live questions in the table were second place and last.

At the top, Ciudad de Logroño and Fraikin Granollers finished level on 43 points, seventeen behind the champions: two clubs of opposite profile — the Rioja side, sustaining its European place on one of the tightest budgets at the top; Granollers, thirteen times champion in the seventies and eighties — fighting for the same spot to the end.

At the bottom, Bada Huesca and Sanicentro Guadalajara went down to División de Honor Plata. And one figure explains the sport better than any adjective: across the season's 240 games, 14,625 goals were scored, almost 61 per match. Handball is not won by one goal out of nowhere: it is won by holding a rhythm for sixty minutes, which is why a scoreline says as much as the winner.

How 2026/27 arrives

Sixteen teams, thirty rounds and 240 games between 12 September 2026 and 5 June 2027. There is no playoff and no final: the champion is whoever leads the table on the last day, and the bottom two drop to Plata.

Barcelona defend with the same question as always, which is no longer whether they win but how long it takes and whether anyone takes a point off them on the way. Behind them, second place is the real business: Logroño and Granollers arrive level from last season, and Bidasoa Irún, Ademar León and Sevilla have settled into the band where the European places are handed out and not a single game is spare.

The rest of the field is the familiar map of Spanish handball: Cuenca, Puerto Sagunto, Torrelavega, Nava, Villa de Aranda, Cangas, Puente Genil, Alicante, Valladolid. Two-thousand-seat halls where the favourite drops a point once a year, and that once decides half the table. One detail worth keeping in mind when predicting: Barcelona also play the Champions League and the Copa del Rey, and the calendar forces them to rotate in three-game weeks.

What a league without a playoff plays for

With no final and no play-offs, everything interesting in ASOBAL sits at the two ends of the table and in a middle band that decides the following year. The champion enters the Champions League; the places behind hand out European League and European Cup berths, which is why the fight for fourth or fifth is tighter than the one for the title.

At the bottom, the last two go down to División de Honor Plata with no reprieve, and with sixteen clubs that means five or six teams spend the whole season inside a four-point margin.

Three more competitions crowd the calendar. The Copa del Rey is played as single ties at a fixed venue, the Copa ASOBAL gathers the top four of the first half of the season in December, and the Supercopa opens the year. None counts towards the league, but all of them take weekends away: for a short-squad club, a midweek cup tie explains why it conceded seven more goals than usual the following Saturday.
