LaLiga 2026/27 (M)

Football · 2026/27

A poor first touch draws whistles; a piece of skill in the right place gets celebrated like half a goal. In Spain, football is judged with the ball at your feet across 38 matchdays from August to May, and that technical exam allows no shortcuts: 20 clubs, 380 games and eight months with nowhere to hide.

The 2026/27 season brings back some real edge, with three heavyweight returns to the top flight — Racing Santander, Deportivo and Málaga, names that had spent far too long out of the spotlight. Up top, the title race runs alongside the war for four Champions League places, the great sporting and financial prize. At the bottom, relegation once again claims three each spring. And in parallel, two unofficial crowns: the sharpest attack and the meanest defence.

But the calendar turns around one date: El Clásico between Real Madrid and Barcelona, which stops half the planet twice a season. Around it, the Madrid derby against Atlético and the Seville derby between Betis and Sevilla supply the rest of the fire.

Ten clubs in 1929 and a pecking order that barely moved

On 10 February 1929 a ten-team championship kicked off; it did not finish until 23 June. Barcelona won it with 25 points, two clear of Real Madrid, and bottom of the pile were Racing Santander, who saved themselves in a play-off against Sevilla decided 3-2 on aggregate. That same Racing, one of the ten founders, is back in the top flight this season: their last campaign there was 2011/12.

The pecking order set then has barely shifted. Real Madrid hold 36 titles and Barcelona 29; Atlético Madrid have 11, Athletic Club 8 and Valencia 6. Real Sociedad have two, while Deportivo, Sevilla and Betis have one apiece. Only three clubs have never been relegated: Real Madrid, Barcelona and Athletic — all three in that 1929 photograph.

The last champion not called Madrid or Barcelona was Atlético, in 2020/21. Before that, Deportivo managed it in 1999/2000, the only title in their history. The fact is useful again: Dépor return eight years after going down in 2017/18, the same season Málaga finished rock bottom on 20 points. They come up together, just as they went down together.

Last season: one single draw in 38 rounds

One draw. That was Barcelona's entire haul of stalemates in 2025/26: 31 wins, one draw and six defeats for 94 points and a 29th title. The league was settled on 10 May 2026 with a 2-0 win over Real Madrid in the Clásico, three rounds still to play.

Real Madrid finished second on 86 points carrying a paradox: they had the meanest defence in the division, 35 goals conceded, and still lost the title by eight. They changed coach in January, when Álvaro Arbeloa replaced Xabi Alonso, and they kept the Pichichi: Kylian Mbappé, 25 goals, ahead of Vedat Muriqi's 23. The Zamora went to Joan García, at 0.70 goals conceded per game. Barça scored 95, the sharpest attack. All told, 1,024 goals in 380 matches, 2.69 per game.

Behind them Villarreal posted 72 points and Atlético 69; Betis were fifth on 60. At the bottom, Oviedo signed off on 29 points and Girona on 41. The third relegation place came down to a three-way tie on 42 between Levante, Osasuna and Mallorca.

How 2026/27 arrives

The calendar opens on Saturday 15 August 2026 at Mendizorroza, Alavés against Getafe at 19:30, and does not stop until 30 May 2027. Barcelona go after a third straight title, something they have not managed since the 2008/09-2010/11 treble of leagues. Chasing them: a Real Madrid that finished eight points back despite conceding only 35 goals, a Villarreal that already took third, and an Atlético with eleven league titles in the cabinet.

Both Clásicos already have their dates: 25 October 2026 in Barcelona, round 10, and 9 May 2027 in Madrid, round 35 — precisely the stretch where last season's title was decided. The Madrid derby comes early: Atlético against Real Madrid on 20 September, round 7, with the return on 4 April. The Seville derby falls on 22 November at the Sánchez-Pizjuán and on 7 February at Betis.

And three reunions carry weight. El Sardinero gets top-flight football back after fourteen years; Riazor after eight. The last time Barcelona played a league game there, on 29 April 2018, they won 4-2 and were crowned champions that same night; Dépor ended that season in the second division.

How it is decided (and why goal difference does not settle it)

Twenty clubs, home and away, 38 rounds, and the champion is whoever has most points on 30 May 2027: no play-off, no final. What almost nobody has straight is the tie-break, because in Spain goal difference does not rule. The official order is points, then head-to-head points, then head-to-head goal difference, then overall goal difference, then goals scored, then fair play. The head-to-head criterion only applies once both meetings between the clubs involved have been played.

Last season that rule sent a team down. Levante, Osasuna and Mallorca all finished on 42 points. By goal difference the order would have been Osasuna (-6), Mallorca (-10) and Levante (-14), and the last of the three goes down. By head-to-head — Levante 7 points, Osasuna 5, Mallorca 3 — the club relegated was Mallorca. The arithmetic almost everyone uses said one thing; the rulebook said the opposite.

At the top, the first four enter the Champions League league phase, fifth goes to the Europa League alongside the Copa del Rey winner, and sixth to the Conference League play-off round. There is an extra door: if Spain finishes among the two best federations in UEFA's annual ranking, a fifth Champions League place is added — exactly what happened last season, and why Betis went in fifth. At the bottom, the last three drop to LaLiga Hypermotion.
