📋 Overview
Eerste Divisie 2026/27 (M)
Football · 2026/27
On these pitches, the stars who will shine tomorrow in the Eredivisie and across Europe cut their teeth. The Dutch second tier is one of the continent's most fertile academies: attacking, brave, high-scoring football, faithful to the Dutch DNA of attacking first and asking questions later.
The 2026/27 season gathers 20 teams in a home-and-away round-robin — 38 rounds — where the top two go straight up to the Eredivisie and six more fight over a third ticket in the play-offs. Here too the duels for sharpest attack and meanest defence play out, two hallmarks of the sides aiming to go up.
What sets it apart is the mix: four reserve sides — Jong Ajax, Jong PSV, Jong AZ and Jong FC Utrecht, none of them eligible for promotion — face historic clubs hungry to return to the elite. Eighteen-year-olds against seasoned veterans, development and goals on the same afternoon.
From two groups to a division of twenty
In its first season, 1956–57, the division ran as two parallel groups and crowned two champions at once: ADO and Blauw Wit shared that inaugural title. Only in 1962–63 did it merge into a single table. Since then it has changed name almost as often as it has changed sponsor: Toto-Divisie in 1990, Gouden Gids Divisie in 2001, Jupiler League in 2006 and, since July 2018, Keuken Kampioen Divisie — an entire tier of Dutch football carrying the name of a kitchen retailer.
FC Volendam top the roll of honour with seven titles, two of them shared back in the twin-group years and the most recent in 2024–25. Behind them sit names still on this season's grid: Heracles Almelo and FC Den Bosch on four; De Graafschap and VVV-Venlo on three; MVV Maastricht, RKC Waalwijk and Vitesse on two; Roda JC Kerkrade, Helmond Sport and FC Emmen on one.
The detail that explains today's line-up is a double bankruptcy. The 2012–13 season ended with sixteen clubs after AGOVV and SC Veendam folded, and to get back to twenty in 2013 the KNVB admitted Achilles '29 plus the reserve sides of Ajax, PSV and Twente. The B teams did not arrive here as a development scheme: they arrived to plug holes.
Last season: 89 points and a shootout that went to five
ADO Den Haag closed out 2025–26 with 89 points from a possible 114: 29 wins, 2 draws, 7 defeats, 90 goals scored and 37 conceded — both the best figures in the division. It was their fourth title at this level, built on a run of twelve straight wins and fourteen matchdays unbeaten. Henk de Jong's SC Cambuur finished second on 78 points and went up alongside them without ever entering the play-offs.
The third ticket was settled on 23 May. Willem II had lost the first leg of the final 1–2 at home in Tilburg — Ould-Chikh and Veerman scored between the 13th and 18th minutes — and returned the 1–2 at the Kras Stadion through Baartmans and Stam before half-time. The 3–3 aggregate survived thirty minutes of extra time. In the shootout all five Tilburg takers scored and Bukala missed his: 5–4, promotion, at FC Volendam's expense.
There was more courtroom than football in Arnhem. On 31 July 2025 Vitesse lost their professional licence and the league kicked off with nineteen teams; on 3 September they won their appeal, were slotted back in and played the whole campaign carrying a twelve-point deduction from the previous year. Romano Postema of FC Emmen was top scorer with 24 goals in a season of 1,214 goals across 380 matches. Jong Ajax finished twentieth.
How 2026–27 arrives
Three teams come down from the Eredivisie and nobody comes up from below: the arithmetic of this division always starts there. FC Volendam arrive after finishing sixteenth on 32 points and losing that shootout; NAC Breda seventeenth on 29; Heracles Almelo eighteenth on 19. All three know the way out, because all three have won this league: Volendam in 2024–25 — seven titles, the outright record — Heracles in 2022–23 and NAC in 1999–2000.
The rest of the grid knows the long route. Five of the six clubs that contested May's promotion play-offs are back on the start line: Almere City, De Graafschap, RKC Waalwijk, Roda JC Kerkrade and FC Den Bosch. Only Willem II are missing, and they went up. Vitesse begin again at the GelreDome a year after starting a season with no licence and twelve points docked, while De Graafschap reopen De Vijverberg and its 12,600 seats.
The calendar spreads 380 matches between Friday 7 August — five fixtures, Vitesse against RKC Waalwijk in Arnhem among them — and 14 May 2027. There is only one long break in between: 21 December to 8 January. Ten months for 38 matchdays and three tickets upwards.
How it is decided: four championships inside one
Every Keuken Kampioen Divisie season hides four smaller championships. The 38 matchdays are split into periods — rounds 1 to 10, 11 to 20, 21 to 29 and 30 to 38 — and whoever collects most points in each stretch wins a periodekampioenschap and, with it, a ticket to the play-offs. Almost nothing like it exists outside the Netherlands: a club sunk by November can still be playing for promotion in the closing stretch.
Two go up automatically, champion and runner-up. The nacompetitie hands the third place to six clubs from this division — the four period champions plus the two best-placed sides who are not period champions — and the Eredivisie's sixteenth. If one team wins two periods, the spare berth passes to the next best club in that stretch, so in practice third to ninth get in: in May 2026 it was the sides finishing 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 8th and 9th.
And one piece of small print reorders everything: the four reserve sides — Jong Ajax, Jong AZ, Jong PSV and Jong FC Utrecht — cannot be promoted. If one finishes top, the title is theirs but the place passes to the next non-reserve club. It has already happened: Jong Ajax won the division in 2017–18 with 79 points and stayed put; Fortuna Sittard, second on 78, went up instead. Nobody goes down either: in June 2022 the KNVB extended its suspension of relegation by another five to ten years, so the twenty who start are the twenty who finish. The same table holds the GelreDome, with 21,248 seats, and AZ's training ground, with a thousand.
