📋 Overview
NWSL 2026 (F)
Football · 2026
Nobody goes down here. A team can finish sixteenth and turn up again in March in the same shirt, unpunished, because this league doesn't expel anyone — it grows. In 2026 there are 16 clubs, two of them brand new (Boston Legacy and Denver Summit), and 240 matches spread from March to November. And the champion doesn't come from the table: it comes from a knockout.
Gotham FC defend the title they took off the Washington Spirit in November. They won the semi-final against Orlando 1-0 and the final against the Spirit 1-0: two games, two goals, an eight-month season settled by the narrowest margin there is. The Spirit had arrived by sweeping Portland 2-0, and left with nothing.
That's the unfinished duel: New Jersey against Washington, the final replayed before a ball is kicked. One goal separated them in November, and neither has forgotten whose. Thirty rounds to decide whether the rematch arrives.
The third time the United States tried
Two leagues went under before this one. The WUSA launched in 2000, built on the World Cup the country had won at home the year before, and closed in 2003. The WPS arrived in 2007 and lasted until April 2012. The NWSL was founded that same year and started playing in 2013 on a deliberately different premise: spend less and grow slowly, which was the exact opposite of what the other two had done.
Thirteen seasons on it is still standing, with the honours spread around. Portland Thorns lead on three titles — 2013, 2017 and 2022; FC Kansas City won back to back in 2014 and 2015, North Carolina Courage did the same in 2018 and 2019, and Gotham have two, from 2023 and 2025. There is no 2020 champion: the pandemic cancelled it.
What has really changed is not the football, it is the crowd. On 23 August 2025, Bay FC and the Washington Spirit drew 40,091 to Oracle Park, San Francisco's baseball stadium. The previous record, from June 2024, had stood at 35,038.
The shield and the trophy went to different houses
The 2025 regular season belonged to the Kansas City Current, who took the Shield as the best team across thirty rounds. Somebody else took the championship. That is the quirk that defines this league: there are two big prizes and they almost never end up in the same cabinet.
Gotham FC closed theirs out in November for a second championship, two years after 2023. On the way they eliminated the Orlando Pride, who arrived as 2024 champions and got no further than the semi-finals. Nobody remembers an NWSL champion for the points they gathered between March and October.
The best team of the regular season finishing without a trophy is not a flaw in the system: it is the system. The thirty matches exist to qualify you and to award the Shield; the championship is played separately, across three weeks of November, where one bad afternoon erases eight good months.
How 2026 arrives: two new clubs and a blank month
The league grows again. Boston Legacy and Denver Summit debut this year, taking the count to 16 clubs, four more than three seasons ago. A place here is not won on the field: you buy in with an expansion fee, which is how a league that expels nobody can keep getting bigger.
The 2026 calendar also carries an oddity no other league has: the whole of June blank. Play pauses from the 8th to the 14th for a break written into the collective bargaining agreement, and from the 15th to the 28th because the men's World Cup is being staged in the United States, Canada and Mexico, and seven of the NWSL's sixteen markets are hosting matches or events. It resumes on 3 July.
One fixture survives in the middle of the break: on 26 June the Challenge Cup pits the champion against the Shield winner — this year Gotham and the Kansas City Current, the two leads of the previous November by opposite routes.
How it is decided: two trophies and no safety net
Thirty matches, home and away against everyone, from 13 March to 1 November. Whoever finishes first takes the Shield, the prize for consistency, and with it the CONCACAF W Champions Cup places. But the NWSL champion is not decided there.
The top eight go through to the playoffs, and in the playoffs there are no second chances: quarter-finals from 6 to 8 November, semi-finals from the 13th to the 15th and the final on the 21st, every round a single game. An eighth seed who wins three afternoons in a row lifts the trophy ahead of the team that ruled thirty rounds, and the rulebook sees nothing strange in that.
What the regular season really hands out, then, is not the title but the order: who meets whom in November, and which clubs go to CONCACAF. Eight months of league football to line yourself up for three weeks in which everything fits inside ninety minutes.
