📋 Overview

UEFA Champions League 2026/27 (M)

Football · 2026/27

Eight games, eight wins, twenty-four points out of twenty-four. Arsenal put together the perfect league phase in 2025/26 and left Budapest in May without the trophy: Paris Saint-Germain won the final from the penalty spot, 4-3, after a 1-1 that would not move in 120 minutes. That is what this competition has been since it stopped having groups.

2026/27 is drawn on 27 August in Monaco and starts on 8 September. Thirty-six clubs — twenty-nine by right and seven out of qualifying — in a single table, each facing eight different opponents, and a final on 5 June at Madrid's Metropolitano. PSG defend a title they have now won twice in a row.

The duel was written by that shoot-out in Budapest: PSG and Arsenal are looking for each other again, one with two cups in three years and the other with none in its history.

From the European Cup to the Swiss model

In 1955 this was the European Cup, a straight knockout between national champions: sixteen clubs, home and away, no safety net. Real Madrid won the first five, a start no club has matched since and the reason they remain the most decorated side, with fifteen.

In 1992 the name changed and, more importantly, so did the door: the Champions League stopped being for champions only and began admitting runners-up, thirds and fourths from the big leagues, with a group stage that lasted thirty-two years. Through it came Milan's seven titles, Bayern's six and Liverpool's six, Barcelona's five and Ajax's four.

The 2024 reform did away with groups. Since then it has been thirty-six clubs in a single table, a model borrowed from chess — the Swiss system — in which nobody plays everybody and yet everybody shares a standing. It was the tournament's biggest structural change in three decades, and the one that forces you to read the competition differently.

How a table of 36 works

Each club plays eight matches against eight different opponents, four at home and four away, drawn from four seeding pots. No two calendars are the same: 144 games across eight matchdays between September and late January, all feeding one standing.

Out of it come three groups with very different fates. The top eight go STRAIGHT to the round of 16 and skip a whole tie. Ninth to twenty-fourth play a two-legged knockout play-off in February, with a place in the last 16 as the prize and the exit door as the punishment. Twenty-fifth to last are out of Europe until next season: there is no drop into the Europa League, another break with the old group stage.

From the round of 16 on, everything is home and away — last 16, quarter-finals and semi-finals — and the final is a single game on neutral ground. On 5 June 2027 that is Madrid's Metropolitano, which also staged the 2019 final, the one Liverpool won 2-0 against Tottenham.

Last season

Arsenal did what nobody had done since the reform: they won all eight league-phase games and finished top on 24 points, with 23 goals scored and only 4 conceded. They ended the season without the trophy.

The champions' road was the opposite. Paris Saint-Germain survived a tie against Bayern settled 6-5 on aggregate, a 1-1 at the Allianz Arena enough to go through; Arsenal, for their part, knocked out Atlético Madrid 2-1 across the two legs, winning 1-0 at the Emirates.

The final was played on 30 May 2026 at Budapest's Puskás Aréna and football did not separate them: 1-1 after extra time, 4-3 to PSG on penalties. It was their second title in a row, something not seen since Real Madrid's run in 2016, 2017 and 2018. For Arsenal it was the second lost final in their history and confirmation that in this format the best league phase guarantees absolutely nothing.

How 2026/27 arrives

The draw is held on 27 August in Monaco and hands each club its eight opponents: twenty-nine teams come in directly and seven emerge from the August qualifying rounds, played while the domestic leagues are already two or three rounds old.

PSG defend with the most uncomfortable label in European football, that of back-to-back winners chasing a modern-era three-peat. Arsenal return with the debt of Budapest. And behind them is the usual list, which in this competition is never the same two years running: Real Madrid and their fifteen cups, Bayern, Liverpool, Barcelona, Manchester City, Inter, Atlético.

One note for predicting, because the format changes everything. In the old groups a big club could lose twice and still go through; here, with eight matchdays and a table of thirty-six, two defeats leave you fighting not to fall out of the top twenty-four. September and October matter as much as January, and the favourite in any given fixture depends on who the draw handed them — not on their league.
