📋 Overview

LEN Champions League 2026/27 (M)

Water Polo · 2026/27

Pro Recco have eleven titles, more than any other club, and they still lost their last final by a single goal. That is how this competition is measured: by the distance between Liguria and the Adriatic, between Budapest, Piraeus and Barceloneta, in pools where a draw does not exist: four level periods go straight to a penalty shoot-out.

The 2026/27 edition starts on 6 October with Zodiac CNAB, Barceloneta's club, as defending champions: in June, in Malta, they won their second title and their first since 2014. Sixteen clubs split into four groups of four, six matchdays through to 16 December, a quarter-final round of two groups of four and, in May, the Final Four at Belgrade's 11 April complex, home pool of Novi Beograd.

That final wrote the rivalry: 17-16, the highest-scoring in the competition's history. Recco led 11-8 inside the first sixteen minutes and ended up with their ninth silver medal. This time they sit in different groups and cannot meet before the quarter-final round. You decide whether Belgrade gets the rematch.

From Belgrade to Belgrade

Ten of the first thirteen editions stayed in Yugoslavia. Water polo's European Cup was born in 1963, Partizan Belgrade were its first champions, and for the next decade it was largely a private matter between two clubs: Partizan themselves, with six titles up to 1976, and Mladost Zagreb, who won three in a row from 1968 to 1970. Only Recco in 1965, OSC Budapest in 1973 and MGU Moscow in 1974 broke the duopoly.

The competition has changed its name and its ending several times. In 1996 it became the Champions League and adopted the Final Four; from 2003 to 2011 it was the Euroleague; between 2014 and 2023 it tried final tournaments of six and eight teams, and in 2024 it went back to the Final Four. It is run today by European Aquatics, the former LEN.

The 21st century belongs to someone else. Recco have won nine of their eleven titles since 2003, and in 2021, 2022 and 2023 they matched Mladost's three in a row — nobody else has managed it. Hungary answered with Ferencváros, champions in 2019, 2024 and 2025. Even so, Partizan and Mladost remain joint second on the all-time roll, with seven cups each.

2025/26: forty-eight hours in Valletta

Barceloneta arrived in Malta on a winning run that did not end there: it closed at 34 straight matches. Waiting for them at Valletta's National Pool Complex were the winners of the previous six editions. In the semi-final on 11 June they drew 9-9 with Ferencváros, the two-time holders, and went through 4-2 on penalties. In the other, Recco dispatched Olympiacos 19-13.

The final came in two very different halves. Recco went in at the break having scored eight goals from eight extra-man chances and leading 12-11; after the interval they went more than four minutes without a goal, and Barceloneta hit the front for the first time since 6-5. Gergely Burián made it 17-15 from an almost impossible angle with 1:39 left, Iocchi Gratta pulled one back and Recco still had a man-up with 57 seconds to play, with Barceloneta coach Fran Fernández sent off for protesting. The defence ended it with a steal. In the Recco side was Álvaro Granados, who had left Barceloneta a year earlier and scored in the final.

Bronze went to Ferencváros, 16-13 against Olympiacos. And at home, Barceloneta collected their 21st consecutive Spanish league title, the 26th in their history.

How 2026/27 shapes up

The draw on 21 September kept Malta's four semi-finalists apart and handed Barceloneta the group with the most history. Group C holds eleven European Cups — Mladost's seven, Jadran Split's two and the holders' two — plus one club with none and no patience left: Novi Beograd, founded in 2015 and beaten finalists in 2022, 2023 and 2025, who had to come through qualifying. May's Final Four is played in their pool, the same one where they lost the 2022 final to Recco on penalties. For the champions, the group stage is a Balkan tour: two trips to Croatia and one to Serbia.

European Aquatics itself calls Group B the group of death: Recco with Brescia, Radnički Kragujevac — knocked out in the groups last season — and Romania's Oradea. Ferencváros, three-time champions, face Euro Cup winners Marseille, Panathinaikos and Steaua Bucharest in Group D. In Group A, Olympiacos have the clearest path on paper, although Waspo Hannover knocked out Sabadell and Marseille a year ago, and Sabadell meet them again, alongside Jadran Herceg Novi.

The qualifying round on 18-20 September completed the line-up with six names: Novi Beograd, Oradea, Brescia, Sabadell, Jadran Split and Panathinaikos.

How it is decided: two group rounds and one weekend

Six matchdays are enough to cut the field in half. Each group of four plays home and away; the top two stay in the Champions League, and third and fourth do not go home: they drop into the Euro Cup's last sixteen, the continent's second competition.

Because a level game goes straight to a shoot-out, the table has its own arithmetic: a win in regulation is worth three points, a shoot-out win two and a shoot-out defeat one. If two teams finish level, head-to-head decides. In 2025/26 the median match produced 27 goals and a three-goal margin across the four periods.

From March, the eight survivors form two new groups of four, each with two group winners and two runners-up, and play home and away again. The top two in each group travel to Belgrade in May, where there is no second chance: semi-finals, a bronze-medal match and a one-off final. It is the first Final Four away from Malta since the competition returned to the format in 2024.
