Eredivisie 2026/27 (M)
Football · 2026/27
The land of Cruyff and Ajax stays true to its creed: total football, the kind played with your guard down — attack, verticality and goals. The Netherlands exports talent and coaches to all of Europe from hugely young sides, with terraces that sing from first minute to last. No league develops players like this one.
The 2026/27 season brings together 18 clubs in a home-and-away round-robin — 34 rounds from August to May — in which the champion is, quite simply, the table's leader. Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord start as favourites, but below them the European tickets are fought over with real cheek. Beyond the title wait two crowns: the sharpest attack and the meanest defence. At the bottom, relegation to the Eerste Divisie and the play-off press to the end.
And above all there is De Klassieker: Ajax against Feyenoord, Amsterdam against Rotterdam, the match that brings the Netherlands to a halt. The city of canals against the city of the port, pride against pride.
The league born of a rebellion
In 1954 Dutch football split in two. The KNVB still clung to amateurism while Dutch internationals drew wages in France and Italy; after the 1953 floods those expatriate professionals staged a charity match against France and won it 2-1 with the federation set against them. A breakaway professional league, the NBVB, kicked off the next season. The truce was drastic: both competitions were scrapped and the merger produced, in 1956, a single top flight. Ajax took the first title, in 1956-57.
Fourteen years later that league turned Europe upside down. Feyenoord won the European Cup on 6 May 1970 at the San Siro, 2-1 against Celtic with an Ove Kindvall goal in the 117th minute — the first for a Dutch club. Ajax took the next three, past Panathinaikos, Internazionale and Juventus, and lifted the 1972 edition at De Kuip of all places: Feyenoord's own ground. The domestic honours board now reads 36 titles for Ajax, 27 for PSV and 16 for Feyenoord.
What almost nobody remembers is that four of this season's eighteen clubs keep a title that came from outside that trio. Sparta Rotterdam were champions in 1958-59, the sixth and last of their history; DOS of Utrecht had won 1957-58 and merged in 1970 with Velox and Elinkwijk to form FC Utrecht. Then came DWS in 1963-64, AZ in 1980-81 and 2008-09, and Twente in 2009-10: since 1965 only three championships have slipped through the big clubs' fingers. And one untouchable mark: Willy van der Kuijlen's 311 goals, 308 of them for PSV, ahead of Ruud Geels (265) and Johan Cruyff (215). The top-scorer trophy has carried his name since 2021.
Champions on 5 April
On 5 April 2026, matchday 29, PSV beat Utrecht 4-3 and then sat back to wait. That same afternoon Feyenoord drew 0-0 at Volendam and the title was settled: the 27th in the cabinet, the third in a row. No Dutch champion had ever been crowned so early, and the previous record — 8 April 1978 — also belonged to PSV.
The numbers explain the feast. Peter Bosz's side finished on 84 points (27 wins, 3 draws, 4 defeats), 101 goals scored and 45 conceded, with runs of 13 straight wins and 18 games unbeaten. Feyenoord came second, 19 points back; behind them came NEC (59), Twente (58) and Ajax (56). The leading scorer was Japan's Ayase Ueda, of Feyenoord, with 25 goals, four of them in a single match on 6 December. The one trophy that did change hands was the KNVB Cup: AZ swept NEC aside 5-1 at De Kuip on 19 April.
At the bottom, Heracles Almelo put together a season that will be hard to repeat. The Asito Stadion staged the biggest home win of the campaign — 8-2 against PEC Zwolle on 2 November, with a Jizz Hornkamp hat-trick between the 18th and 32nd minutes — and the biggest away win too: the 0-7 Feyenoord handed them on 19 October. They finished last on 19 points, with 25 defeats and 85 goals conceded. NAC Breda (29) went down directly alongside them. Volendam, 16th on 32, still had a door left ajar.
How 2026/27 arrives
Five days before the opening round, AZ turned up at the Philips Stadion and walked off with the Johan Cruijff Schaal after a 4-0. PSV played more than eighty minutes with ten men following Joey Veerman's early dismissal and shipped goals to Mexx Meerdink, Weslley Patati, Elijah Dijkstra and Ro-Zangelo Daal. It is the second Super Cup for the Alkmaar club, who also arrive holding the KNVB Cup.
Even so, PSV remain the yardstick. Bosz stays on the bench with Jerdy Schouten as captain, has lost Ismael Saibari — signed by Bayern — and has covered for him with Sven Mijnans, of all clubs from AZ. The noisiest rebuild is Ajax's: Míchel replaced Óscar García on 2 June, Jordi Cruyff runs the operation from the office, and in have come Julian Brandt from Borussia Dortmund and Brazilian Marcos Leonardo from Al-Hilal; Wout Weghorst left for Twente, who also took Ramiz Zerrouki.
The most debated move belongs to Feyenoord: they sacked Robin van Persie in June despite a runners-up finish and a direct Champions League ticket, and brought back Giovanni van Bronckhorst, the coach who in 2016-17 delivered a title the club had been missing since 1999. FC Utrecht start a new era — Ron Jans retired and Anthony Correia has been in charge since 1 July — and Go Ahead Eagles have appointed Joseph Oosting. Three old acquaintances are back as well: ADO Den Haag after five years away, Cambuur after three, and Willem II, who earned their ticket in a penalty shoot-out in May.
How it is decided
Eighteen clubs, 34 rounds, 306 matches between 7 August 2026 and 23 May 2027. The 71st edition has no play-off phase and no title decider: the champion is whoever collects the most points, full stop.
Europe, by contrast, comes with small print. First place enters the Champions League league phase; second, the Champions League third qualifying round; third, the Europa League second qualifying round; and from fourth downwards a European play-off of one-off ties, with extra time and penalties, decides the last ticket. Because the KNVB Cup winner also takes a place, that door slides further down the table: in May 2026, with AZ already qualified through the cup, ninth-placed Groningen got in, and Ajax beat Utrecht in the final on 24 May on penalties (1-1, then 4-3).
Relegation is even more deceptive. Only 17th and 18th go down automatically; 16th defends its place in the nacompetitie against six Eerste Divisie clubs, two-legged ties with the higher-ranked side at home for the return. It is no formality: in May 2026 Volendam reached that final from the Eredivisie, lost it to Willem II — 3-3 on aggregate, 5-4 on penalties — and dropped to the second tier.
